Why buy an ATV?
You see a lot of Utility ATVs being ridden at recreation spots like desert OHV areas and on private property. Some are bought with every intention of being used as a tool but often see just as much recreation time, which isn't a bad thing.
In 1986 Honda released the FourTrax TRX350 4x4. This ushered in the era of popular four-wheel drive ATVs. By the early 90's people began to realise that ATVs make great work vehicles. So they began to show up on farms and orchards alike.
A "Quad bike" is recognised by UK law as a vehicle with four wheels and a mass of less than 550 kg. 19 To drive a quad bike on a public road, in the UK, requires a B1 license as well as tax, insurance and registration.
Children's ATVs are smaller than the other different types of ATVs. They usually come between 50cc and 110cc, and in some cases go up to 125cc. They offer little or no suspension, little power and an automatic transmission or no gears at all.
The Modern ATV
In 1990 development of utility ATVs was rapidly escalating. The 1986 Honda FourTrax TRX350 4x4 ushered in the era of four-wheel drive ATVs. Other manufacturers quickly followed suit, and 4x4s have remained the most popular type of ATV ever since. These machines are popular with hunters, farmers, ranchers and workers at construction sites.
Models continue today, to be divided into the sport and utility markets. Sports models are generally small, light, two-wheel drive vehicles. These accelerate quickly, have a manual transmission and run at speeds up to approximately 80 mph (130 km/h).
ATV in Sports
ATV National Motocross Championship 33 was formed around 1985. ATVMX events are hosted at premiere motocross racetracks throughout the United States.
ATVMX consists of several groups, including the Pro (AMA Pro) and Amateur (ATVA) series. Friday involves amateur practising and racing on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday also involves racing for the Pro-Am Women and Pro Am Unlimited classes. Sunday involves racing for the Pro and Pro-Am production ATVs but are scored separately. On average weekend over 500 racers will compete.
The two most prominent ATV battery manufacturers are Yuasa and DEKA. They have their main United States facilities only 20 miles apart in Pennsylvania.
Buying a Used ATV
First impressions last a lifetime and when you see the machine you might want to buy. When you see it for the first time you can immediately get a feel for how it has been cared for.
Broken plastics and plastics discoloured by the weather are common in the off-road industry. But look closely to see if the fractured fender is not hiding additional damage from the collision.
